8/25: Open Mic Sandwich features Carolyn Busa and Frank Genzano. Host Tommy Highland is in the semis of Helium's Philly's Phunniest! #
August is a hot, hot month – for stand up comedy, that is! Next week Helium Comedy Club crowns a champion of joke-making in its annual Philly’s Phunniest Person contest. Every summer, the city’s tastiest stand-up talent is boiled down into a delectable comedy reduction sauce that pairs perfectly with a night out with friends. People, that steam coming out of our fair city’s manholes isn’t sewer stink – them’s comedy fumes.
Is it exaggerating to say that this is the most important competition in the history of comedy? Yes it is. But hey, hyperbole is the spice that makes good blogs good, right? The final preliminary round is Sunday, August 22 – 7:00PM; the top comedians from the 9 preliminary rounds square off winners from the semi-finals and finals take place on the 29th, 30th, and 31st.
Thanks to Helium, the August edition of Open Mic Sandwich is 100% Sandwichier. We’re sandwiching an open mic in between three high-end comedians. Then we’re sandwiching THAT show between two slices Philly’s Phunniest bread. Even Dagwood Bumstead might balk at a sandwich this size.
Funny fatale and 2009 semi-finalist Carolyn Busa performs in the final preliminary round on 8/22, and then again at OMS 8/25. I’m not usually a gambling lady, but I’m betting Ms. Busa we’ll see back at Helium on the 29th. OMS host Tommy Highland already passed the taste test and is slated to perform at the 8/29 semi-final.
OMS’ third comic chose to fast from this year’s competition, but I think Frank Genzano might have even bigger fish to fry as soon as this fall. We’ll let him tell you the rest.
Stop by Open Mic Sandwich Wednesday, 8/25 8:30pm at Fergie’s Pub (1214 Sansom Street, Philadelphia PA). The show is free, and you might even win tickets to an upcoming show at Helium, just for showing up at a free show. Isn’t America awesome?
Comics interested in performing at OMS can sigh up for the open mic portion starting at 8:00 pm. For more info about booking, use our awesome Contact Form.

Why? Because Rodgers and Hammerstein, Philly’s only improvised musical, is in Baltimore! Ladies and Gentlemen are reprising the smash hit of the spring at the Baltimore Improv Festival. Conicidentally, Baltimore is full of some fabulous people (including recent Philly transplants Tom and Micheline McManus). So it’s the perfect fit for a troupe full of some of my favorite improvisers.
Break a leg, y’all!
Watch Ladies and Gentlemen in “Scratch Tickets – Part 1″:
See all 6 parts of “Scratch Tickets” here. More videos of hot BIF action (including Philly favorites and group de yours truly Rare Bird Show) can be found allover the internet.
Philadelphians, internet, the world: you’ve all probably noticed that there hasn’t been much to read around these parts besides our Twitter updates (hey, are you following us on Twitter?). After enlisting the help of Webmaster/Spiderman Daniel P Craig, Kate and I were free to put our attention to what we do best: producing excellent shows and not updating websites.
Since closing the incredible Rodgers and Hammerstein Are Dead, we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to prep for our upcoming fall lineup. In September we’re bringing back darling duo Cecily and Gwendolyn for an all-new adventure. In November we’re teaming up with the Philadelphia Improv Festival and Philly Sketchfest for COMEDY MONTH. But before all that hugungous major stuff goes down, we’ve got DAZED AND AMUSED: THE 24 HOUR IMPROV MARATHON. A handful of lunatic improvisers are going to perform improv for 24 consecutive hours to benefit EducationWorks because hey, who needs sleep? Not these clowns.
Updates to the main page are scheduled for the weekend, so check back after Saturday for more information. For updates and random musings, come right back to this very page.
