Studies in the Sugar Ray Leonard Wind-Up Sucker Punch

Published on March 1st, 2010no comments

So it turns out it’s not really appropriate to call that funny wind-y punch used by Sugar Ray Leonard a “sucker punch.” You know that punch, right internet? Like where he’s all waving and circling his right fist, and you’re all watching it so you don’t get punched in the face, and while you’re watching it go round and round and round, he socks you with the LEFT hand? Apparently, this is not a “sucker punch.” This is “good boxing.” Sorry, Sugar.

However, it is pretty funny to think of one of the greatest fighters of all time- a fighter so great even I have heard of him- using dirty tricks to get ahead. On that note, here are some other moves made famous by the legendary Sugar Ray:

1) Sugar Ray hands you a copy of the Wall Street Journal and says there is a really important op-ed article on the market collapse on page A3. You open the paper, get about 3 lines deep into a piece by Thomas Frank, and then BLAMMO! He punches you right in the face! Right through the paper!

2) You are changing in the locker room before the big fight. You open your locker and notice that there’s a mirror in there. You don’t remember putting it there, but figure you might as well check out your fine self before stepping into the ring. But looking into the mirror, you see- and you’ve never noticed this before- that your eyes reveal the childish terror deep inside you. You’ve tried so hard to pretend you weren’t afraid, playing the “big man on campus” (why else would you choose to pursue a boxing career?), but your eyes give it all away. Is everyone going to see this? you wonder. Is it true what they say about not running from your fears? Maybe it’s time to face up to my life. Call my Dad up, tell him I love him, even though I know he won’t say it ba–and then BLAMMO!!! Sugar Ray punches you in the back of the head, then takes his mirror out of your open locker.

3) Sugar Ray kills a baby deer and wears it like a suit. I think you can see where this is going.

James Hesky at Open Mic Sandwich – NSFW

Published on February 22nd, 2010no comments

We’re 6 days away from kicking off our first stand-up comedy class, and we’re less than 3 days from round 2 of our monthly open mic hybrid “Open Mic Sandwich”. We might as well officially start calling this PJI Stand-Up Week. Quick, somebody call Mayor Nutter! And somebody else- make a flashy button! It isn’t official until we’re all wearing a flashy button.

Performing at this month’s OMS are Chip Chantry, Steve Gerben, and James Hesky. Below is aquick clip of Hesky performing at January’s OMS. Warning: video is Not Safe For Work (language).

Pittsburgh native and South Philly resident James Hesky is a regular in the Philadelphia open-mic circuit and can usually be seen four or five nights a week at clubs like the Laff House, Raven Lounge, and TriTone. Growing up the son of two psychologists taught James to diagnose exactly how screwed up he really is. This undesirable talent leads him to use a fair amount of self deprecating humor that makes the audience laugh but feel guilty at the same time.

Warning: NSFW! Watch with headphones, or if your employer is very particular, wait until you get home.

James Hesky – Open Mic Sandwich 1.27.10 from Philadelphia Joke Initiative on Vimeo.

James will be performing a full set at Open Mic Sandwich this Wednesday, February 24th, 2010.
Show begins 8:30pm and continues until 11:30 or so.  Stop by any time! There’s never a cover.

Upstairs at Fergie’s Pub, 1214 Sansom Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107

Alexis Simpson: Triple Threat!

Published on February 18th, 2010no comments

As Producing Artistic Director/Superman, I wear many hats. One of those hats is of course, Producing. Another hat would be Artistic Director.  Of course, sometimes there comes a time to take my PJI hats “OFF!” and put on a couple of other hats- those hats that constitute your classic “Triple Threat.”

February of two-thousand ten is just such a time for taking HATS! off. In the interest of promoting my abilities to the greater Philadelphia community, I’m posting my headshot and resume! But watch out, Philadelphia theatre! I’ve already sent hard copies of these bad boys to both the Arden Theatre Company and 1812 Productions! I’m no fortune teller (one can only wear so many hats!!!!) but I’m pretty sure that once those envelopes get opened I will be the hottest ticket on Broad Street (Look out, Ben Dibble)! I say play it safe: book now, or forever hold your peace.

Thanks! Plus: A video!

Published on February 11th, 2010no comments

We’ve said it already, but how about three more cheers for Kelly Jennings, Karen Getz, CUBED, The N Crowd, The Real Housewives of Philadelphia, Rare Bird Show, m@&, ComedySportz’s Improvised Shakespeare, Leo Callahan, Hello Laser, Chip Chantry, and the good folks at the Latvian Society?

We’d also like to thank our generous sponsors, as well as everyone who came out to see all the shows that were part of Cecily and Gwendolyn’s Fantastical Balloon Ride. Your support means so much to us. We can’t do it without you!

Now presenting, for your amusement: A video! Cecily and Gwendolyn filmed this one evening in the laboratory. They had access to two Philadelphia subjects, “Joe” and “Kristen”,  who were willing to participate as long as they remained off-camera. Hey, Leonard Cohen- if you’re watching, we’d loooooove to see some medical terminology on the next album. Just sayin’.

Ladies and Gentlemen, presenting… Ladies and Gentlemen!

Published on February 10th, 2010no comments

If you’re the type of dude that follows our Facebook, Tweet machine, or the general buzz of the internet rumor mill, you may have already heard about the upcoming project Rodgers and Hammerstein Are Dead. If you’re particularly “with it”, you may already know that the piece is created and performed by Ladies and Gentlemen. But if you didn’t make it out to Monday’s On Stage Philadelphia at Plays & Players, where L&G made their smash debut, then you probably have no idea who they are! YIKES!

Curiosity is a signpost of great intelligence, and you, dear reader, are obviously one smart cookie. For you, we’ll answer the eternal question: who in the seam hall are these Ladies and Gentlemen?!?

First, a general blurb: Ladies and Gentlemen is Philadelphia’s newest musical improv group. These talented performers take a single audience suggestion and turn it into a fully-formed, Broadway-style musical. Every note, every word, every kickline is made up on the spot. Comprised of some of Philadelphia’s finest improvisors, Ladies and Gentlemen looks to take Broad Street by storm with its blend of toe-tapping melodies and improvised comedy.

The Ladies and Gentlemen are directed by Jason Stockdale. The musical director is the insanely talented Joe Gribbin.

The Cast:

Kennedy Allen
Olivia Brubaker
Apple Milkshake
Joe Sabatino
Kristen Schier
Alexis Simpson
Kelly Vrooman
Alan Williams

Want more? Keep checking the Listen to the Ladies and Gentlemen on Episode 60 of the Rep Radio podcast here. Episode 60 also features the Movement Brigade and the Philly Contact Collective.
